Perhaps they felt a great disturbance in the Disney partnership Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in surprise, because after being hounded online about releasing a first trailer for the film by countless fans for months on end, an extremely (extremely) rough cut of Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home promo had seemingly leaked online, and it was spreading fast. (UPDATE! the official trailer has now landed and we broke it all down here) The film is a crucial MCU Phase 4 installment that Marvel and Sony have desperately tried to keep under wraps, with Tom Holland reprising his role as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, J. B. Smoove, Jacob Batalon, and Marisa Tomei. Benedict Cumberbatch also joins the Spider-Verse this time as Doctor Strange, replacing the late Tony Stark as Peter’s mentor. Holland has been teased for a number of years over accidental MCU spoilers, but it looks like he’s definitely off the hook for this recent mishap. The Cherry actor simply posted three intriguing words to his Instagram Stories in the wake of the leak – “You Ain’t Ready!” – but no official comment from Sony or Marvel was available at the time of writing. The trailer footage was clearly cut before most of the VFX were added, and was presented in the kind of disastrous way that would give Christopher Nolan nightmares – with a phone filming another phone screen filming another screen – but that didn’t stop fans getting the gist of the trailer. Spider-Man: No Way Home has been eyeing a December 17 debut this year despite widely fluctuating theatrical releases industrywide, as studios struggle to work out how to compete in a big streaming landscape that has only burgeoned during the pandemic. The actual completed Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer is rumored to be premiering at CinemaCon this week, but Sony may well have already lost control of some of its surprises in the leak. We won’t discuss those here, as you might be waiting to see the final version of the trailer when it’s released, but the meme machine never sleeps, and fans took to social media to gently mock the leak after the internet got wind of it.
